Velvet buck in infrared mode

By Joel Schnell for Ruffed Grouse Minnesota

One of my favorite rituals is checking the trail camera pictures.

Surprises are welcome in this case. Seeing the year-round residents of my properties carrying on when I’m away is a window into their lives. And like guests at a big party, you never know who’s going to show up. I’ve got few cameras dialed into game trails, silently waiting. Step into the photo booth, critters.

Rocky Racoon, he could lose a few pounds.
The fisher, bigger than a marten and a fierce predator
The timberwolf, I hear his howl late at night
Another velvet buck, if you cut a trail for them in the thickness they will use it
A good sized bruin. As Ted Nugent would say, a Toyota with fur
